ABOUT
Hello and welcome! I love language and working with words. As a translator, I consider myself both a skilled technician and a passionate artist. I love words in, of, and for themselves. But more than that my work is about the power of language to change worlds, to make knowable the unknown, and to expand curiosity and compassion. This power (and responsibility) resides in the most mundane written notes, instructions, and signage as well as in the loftiest poems, literature, and academic papers – which is to say, no job is too small or too large!
ABOUT MY PROCESS
The process that I generally follow as a translator is to first gain an understanding of the intent and target audience for the document. I then translate the source material “by hand,” followed by reworking it in the target language for readability, natural flow, and conciseness, and then I recheck it against the source material for accuracy and final proofreading. I maintain an extensive working glossary that I build upon continually.
A NOTE ABOUT MACHINE TRANSLATION & AI
When I say that I translate “by hand,” I mean that I don’t use any machine translation software or AI tools in my work. While I firmly believe that the humans still have a role to play in translation work, I am not opposed to the rapid strides being made in AI translation if it ultimately leads to greater democratization of language access.
